A USA Today Happy Ever After Blog Recommended Read.

We were never supposed to meet. I was warned to stay away from her. Chrissie was young, beautiful, and off-limits. That didn’t stop me from being her first, but it was my heart that was changed forever by our first night together. I knew then she was The Girl. The only one on this earth perfect for me.

I knew what I wanted.
I wanted to love her forever.

But she walked away.

Sure, I’ve had other girls since her. I’m the number one rock star on the planet. I can have any girl I want. But I’ve never let go of her. Not in my heart.

Just when it seemed I’d forever be loving Chrissie without her loving me…the unthinkable happened.

Now that we’re both single, I’m going to claim the girl that got away. Whatever it takes this time, I’m making her mine.

This book has a happy ending.

Broken Crown Sand Fog Series Book 1 edition by Susan Ward Sara Eirew Andrea McKay Arts Photography eBooks Reviews

I never really put much thought into what it meant to have a book coming out that was in one of my favorite characters points of view.  To finally know what's running through his head after four books in Chrissie's.  I wouldn't have expected him to be so funny.  To hear his inner monologue teeming with emotion, devotion and passion.  Not that I didn't anticipate those things from Alan, I just wasn't prepared for Susan to knock it out of the park so phenomenally. Cheers to you Susan for making Alan even more endearing and for giving his and Chrissie's journey a fantastic conclusion.

But first, let's start at the beginning.  The year is 2013.  It's been many years since the plot ending for The Girl in the Comfortable Quiet. But don't fret!  The format at the beginning of Broken Crown jumps back to key moments in a very fluid manner.  It was highly enjoyable and well written.

There are many shocking events that take place in this book.  And just when you think there's smooth sailing, just remember who wrote it, that it makes the payout even sweeter.

For as much angst and heart break Chrissie and Alan have endured, they arrive to the place they are meant to be and at a perfect moment in time.  Everything they have been through, every harsh word said, every door that was closed, has lead them to this moment.  It has molded them into who they are today.  Someone who knows what they want and are not willing to risk losing that again. I am in love with this book.   It's as simple as that.

Broken Crown has some of my favorite characters making an appearance.  Jack has been in Alan's life a long time and it was great to finally read about his connection throughout the years.  Linda is loyal and a tough cookie as always.  But what I'm really all mushy and excited about?!  The new cast we are introduced to!  I look forward to reading more about Kaley in The Girl of Sand and Fog. You can bet I'm counting down the days for that release. ;)

One last observation.  How gorgeous is this cover and the cover model?! *sigh*
I have mixed emotions about this book. While I am thrilled that the crazy and mind-boggling love Alan and Chrissie had for each other stood up to the test of time, I cannot condone keeping the secret of Alan fathering not just one but ALL five of her children. He had the right to know, no matter if he had still been the Alan he was Chrissie eluded to in the epilogue. It was mentally exhausting to go through their addiction, which was each other. It all makes sense now. Jesse wrote, "While Alan was able to kick his heroin addiction, he had never been able to kick his second addiction." We know who that was.
This was probably a good story but it's hard to tell because the author jumps right in with a slew of characters that she presumes I'm supposed to know. Within the first two chapters I'm swimming in names; Sammy, Jackson, Chrissie, Alan, Len, Jesse, Linda, Miles, Andy, Kaley, Bianca...on it goes without description of who they are. The title of this book says it's "Sand & Fog Series Book 1", making me think it's the beginning of this series; like the first book......yet throughout the story I'm frustrated...fumbling in left field...at night...and it's pitch black. The prologue set a depressing mood within me...talking of death and divorce and unhappiness. And I didn't like how the author jumped back and forth through the years; and right from the beginning?!?... reminiscing the memories etc., that she's assuming I know about?!? It only deepened my frustration and confusion --- add in the slew of names and I'm now camped out in left field...it's like being lost in a strange neighborhood, in a strange city, on foot, at midnight. This story is full of misunderstandings and false assumptions and regrets between (what I eventually figure out), the two main characters. It's full of "probablie's", and should'a, could'a, would'a's. It wore me out with boredom and confusion within the first three chapters; with all the ups and downs and misunderstandings of Alan & Chrissie. I mean, couldn't these two just have an adult conversation to clear everything up? They're exhausting. I've always hated Soap Opera's --- this book reminded me of why I never watch them. Gawd I was just so tired of hearing this guy, Alan...whine over the loss of his true love --- yet he does nothing about it. And it's sad because he sounded like a guy I'd wanna know better. But he & Chrissie go years...YEEEEEEEEEEEEARS...without seeing or talking to each other and each blames the other...constantly circling one another with barbs, innuendo & mixed messages...masquerading as conversation. Then more years go by. It became beyond frustrating to read it. I was rubbing my face with both hands, groaning out loud and trying to stay awake. And on it went. Repeating itself. And the thing that exacerbated my frustration the most.....is that I might've liked and enjoyed this couple if the author allowed me to connect to them. And this big secret...this big "reveal"??...you could see coming miles away. MILES and MILES away. I'm proud to say I finished the whole yawning book...probably because by 75% I became somewhat interested in Alan Manzone's conundrum...wondering how this author was going to finish this story. You cannot begin to fathom my relief when I finally came to the final page.
I'm only 39% of the way into this book & have never felt so compelled to write a review. This book is like a train wreck. It is so very frightening and bad but I can't stop reading. The chick in this book is so effing crazy that I feel like *I'm* the one being messed with. Like, is this for real?! I keep reading... trying to figure out how it could possibly keep going. This poor guy just keeps allowing her to manipulate and do such horrible stuff to him and he keeps chasing her. For like 20+ years??!! And then the next page over, everything is suddenly his fault & he's the crazy one. Don't waste your time on this. Seriously. Keep your sanity (
